An important feature of Sulam is the collection of resource materials available to educators. These help you prepare a lesson for a specific service opportunity, lead a reflection group, or better understand the concept and applicability of service learning. We have three sets of materials – a library of books, videos and the like, lesson plan/program curricula, and smaller articles and essays. Resources in the library may be checked out while you have access to a copy of the others. We are always gathering and sorting more resources so check back to find out what’s new.

We have over 200 volumes in our library for you to check out. These materials are held in Sulam’s special collection of The Jewish Community Library of Los Angeles. These materials are available from the Library and may be checked out for 2 weeks.

Search the Jewish Community Library catalog to find titles of books, videos, and the like included in Sulam’s collection by clicking here. The library will mail checked out material to you, if needed.

Title: To Do The Right and The Good
Author: Elliot N. Dorff
Publisher: -
Publishing Year: 2002
Topics Covered: A Jewish Approach to Modern Social Ethics. Do what is right and good in the sight of the Lord... (Deut. 6:18). These words, taken from the Bible, launch Rabbi Elliot N. Dorff's examination of Judaism's commitment to social equality.

Review:

Rabbi Dorff does an excellent job of explaining Judaism's role in social justice and ethics withing modern times and specifically relating to its place among other peoples and religions. The textual backing all throughout the book will give every service learning educator usefull knowledge, however Chapter 6 is where you'll find unmatched use for this resource. The chapter, titled A Jewish Approach to Poverty, gives valuable modern prespectives and biblical support for Judaism's responsibility to helping all those in need and ending poverty.

Title: Being a Blessing
Author: Rabbi Harris R. Goldstein
Publisher: Alef Design Group
Publishing Year: 1994
Topics Covered: Being a Blessing: 54 Ways You Can Help People Living With AIDS. Rabbi Goldstein presents texts and steps to enrich the lives of those living with AIDS and all of us who are affected by this epidemic.

Review:

Goldstein's book is a great service learning resource and reaches further than acting as a guide for helping people with AIDS. The book is broken down into scetions that deal with study, action and reflection. He first introduces Torah and the three mitzvot he relates to helping those with AIDS: Pikuach Nefesh (saving life), Bikkur Cholim (visiting the sick), and Shituf B'tsaar (alleviating another's pian). The book concludes offering different ways one can act ("Tikkun Olam" he titles this section) and help those with AIDS; giving both standard community service options and more creative ways. Goldstein's fusion of Jewish learning with specific acts of service acts as a model for Jewish service learning. His writing style and the questions he poses are a natural catalyst for student reflection- allowing maximum understanding and growth.

Hamner's book outlines service learning with a very basic and easy to understand formula. Building Bridges focuses on why service learning is beneficial to both the student and the community, how to participate in or create a service learning experiences, and the best practices for reflection. Specifically in this area, she highlights ways to write reflective essays and how they differ from other papers or essays.
